Gua Sha
Gua Sha is commonly used in Asia but is much less well known in the Western world. However it is an effective treatment, particularly relating to muscular pain. In Gua Sha, the skin is pressured, in strokes (similar to a massage), by a round-edged instrument (I use a Chinese soup spoon!). The purpose of this is to raise any “stagnated” blood and qi to the surface to once again allow the natural flow of energy in the body.
The treatment itself is slightly uncomfortable and can be a little painful in areas where the flow is particularly stagnated (think of a river flowing and then it gets stopped by there not being enough water or debris stops its flow). However as with all treatments you are in control.
If there is stagnation in the body this shows on the surface of your skin and looks like bad bruising. It does not look pleasant but the “bruising” itself does not hurt. You may be sore after the treatment but in the same way as if you had had a deep tissue massage.
This may seem like a strange treatment but all the clients I have used it on actually really enjoy the treatment, particularly because of the immediate relief they feel afterwards.
This treatment does not tend to be used in isolation and will form part of the treatment as a whole. Everything would be fully explained to you prior to applying this treatment method.
